The Full Story

Collagen & Biostimulator Treatments

Supporting Skin Quality, Structure & Hydration

Collagen and biostimulator treatments are injectable treatments used to support different aspects of skin quality, hydration and tissue structure.

Unlike treatments primarily used to create immediate volume or alter facial movement, these treatments may be selected when the treatment focus is on the quality, texture, hydration or structural support of the skin.

Different products work in different ways. A consultation with a qualified health practitioner is required to determine whether treatment is appropriate and which option may be suitable.

Rejuran

Polynucleotide Skin Treatment

Rejuran is an injectable treatment containing polynucleotides (PN), purified DNA fragments used in aesthetic medicine for their interaction with the skin and its repair environment.

Rather than acting as a traditional volumising dermal filler, Rejuran is used as a skin-quality treatment. It may be considered where the treatment objective includes improving the appearance of skin texture, elasticity and overall skin quality.

Treatment generally involves multiple small injections placed across the selected area. Depending on individual assessment, Rejuran may be used on areas such as the face and delicate areas of skin.

Because it is administered by injection, temporary redness, swelling, bruising and small raised areas at injection sites can occur following treatment.

A consultation is required to assess suitability, expected outcomes, treatment frequency, risks and alternatives.

Profhilo®

Injectable Hyaluronic Acid Treatment

Profhilo® is an injectable product containing a high concentration of hyaluronic acid.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring component of the skin with a strong capacity to bind water. Profhilo® is designed to distribute within the tissue following injection and is used in aesthetic practice where improvement in skin hydration and skin quality is the treatment objective.

Profhilo® is not used in the same way as a conventional dermal filler designed to create defined facial volume or contour. Treatment is performed using specific injection points determined by the treating health practitioner.

Temporary swelling, redness, tenderness, bruising or raised areas at injection sites may occur.

Individual results and treatment requirements vary. Suitability, risks, expected outcomes and alternative treatment options are discussed during consultation.

Sculptra®

Collagen-Stimulating Injectable Treatment

Sculptra® is an injectable treatment containing poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA).

PLLA is a biocompatible material that is used within the tissue to stimulate a biological response that includes new collagen formation. For this reason, Sculptra® is commonly described as a collagen-stimulating or biostimulatory injectable treatment.

Unlike treatments intended to produce an immediate filling effect, changes following Sculptra® develop progressively as the tissue responds following treatment.

It may be considered when the treatment objective involves gradual improvement in structural support and the appearance of areas affected by changes in facial volume and skin structure.

The number of treatments required varies between individuals and is determined following clinical assessment.

As with any injectable procedure, side effects can occur. These may include swelling, redness, tenderness, bruising and other injection-related reactions. Less common complications are discussed as part of the consultation and consent process.

Which Treatment Is Different?

Although Rejuran, Profhilo® and Sculptra® are sometimes grouped together as “skin boosters” or “biostimulators”, they are not interchangeable.

Rejuran contains polynucleotides and is primarily approached as a skin-quality treatment.

Profhilo® is based on injectable hyaluronic acid and is commonly used where hydration and skin quality are treatment priorities.

Sculptra® contains poly-L-lactic acid and works through a collagen-stimulating tissue response, with changes developing progressively over time.

The appropriate treatment depends on the condition of the skin, facial anatomy, treatment area, medical history and the outcome being sought.
